Culminating Blog Reflection

Throughout this project I experienced so many things that helped me out not just as a student but as person as well. I used critical thinking when it came to my research paper and when my mentor asked me question. Most of the time when one of his appointment ends he asked me questions about the appointment. He point out specific things about the appointment thats why I always pay attention on his appointments. When I worked with my mentor, the collaboration that we had was something different. We always connect with the things we do. He helps me out what I should talk about in my blogs and in life. How I can help out people in the future.

I gained so much because of this project. I learned so many things from my mentor and things we did. I became more patience to people. I don't get annoyed so easily by people. I became more social with new people I meet because he would make me talk to the people he introduce me. I became more open and got more comfortable with people. I became a smarter person not justin books but in general as well. I think about the consequences before I do things.

Theres some challenges that I had to overcome when it came to this project. First, getting to my mentor is one of my challenges that I had to overcome. I dont drive yet and if I take the bus it would take me forever just to get to my mentor. I had to ask my parents to drop me off at Skyline College so I can do my hours. Another challenge was finding my mentor. I was scared that I wouldnt find my mentor and lose all the points of that part of the project, which is ten percent of it. Last thing I had to overcome was my shyness. I'm a very shy person in the beginning. I had to get comfortable real fast because I meet new people everyday. As a counselor you have to comfortable on who youre having a meeting with. I learned that to my mentor because he meets new people everyday and different ages as well.

Doing this project made me want to pursue counseling in the future. it gave me a different perspective about counseling. I love my mentors jobs and it makes me want to be a counselor. He's not just a counselor but he is also a teacher, artist, hip-hop expert and a wonderful person to his kids. I want to be just like him if I ever come a counselor. This been a great experience for me. I learned so much in this couple of months I been doing this project.

Final Hours

3 hours down so 0 more to go, 25 hours in total
This is a late post blog because I didnt have time to blog about my last hour. For my last hour, I went to  Skyline to meet up my mentor on a Saturday. They had a play about the Filipino that the student made. I was there to help out my mentor. My job there was to make sure that the people that comes in has their ticket before they go in. He said some people tries to sneak in at the show. I got there around 5:30 pm. before the show even began. I waited for Mr. Nevado in front of the main theater of Skyline. When I was there I met more people, which was awesome. There was some kids from Oceana High School as well but they were there to promote an event that they're having. I stayed for three hours which completed my hours. 25 hours done working with my mentor and it was an amazing experience.

typical day

Another 2 hours done 3 more to go. 22 hours in total
Today, my mentor had 3 appointments. It was two old ladies and one guy. It was a typical appointment for us though. When I asked him about whats the reason people go and come meet with him. He said most people see him because of scheduling and transferring. But He also said some people go to him because of personal problems as well. After appointments we went out and walked around. We went to the theater to check out the rehearsal for the show that his students are making. We also took pictures of his offices and his classroom. I liked the view in the balcony of his room.

Something new everyday.

2 hours down so 5 more to go. 20 hours in total
Three appointment today, three different kind of people. I learn something everytime I go to my mentor and I love it. I already feel the experience of being a mentor and some parts that involves being a counselor. What I learned today? hmm... Well I learned that theres different kind of people that can go to you. As a counselor you accept this a do the best of your capability to help them out. Today on of the appointment was an old man,  he was about 50 plus of age. For that appointment, my mentor told me that some people they wouldn't believe that he's the counselor. But, he respected my mentor when he talks. The second appointment was a guy that used to be part of a gang and used to be in jail. Mr. Nate Nevado told me that when you encounter people like this you have to keep it chill and make sure you dont offend them. The guy told him that he wanted to change and help kids. He wants to get back to help his community. He's already part of a program that helps kids to not go to a path that he took when he was a kid. My mentor told me that always have eye contacts because you dont want to show the person that youre scared. Its making it seem like youre judging them and kind of pushing them away. The last appointment was a guy, pretty young too. He was kicked out of Cal State in the East Bay because he wasnt focus on school. He went from a 4 years to a 2 years school. Well thats what all that happened to my mentor today.

Last day in class

2 hours down 7 more to go! 18 hours in total
The last day that I was in my mentor's class was pretty cool. It somewhat felt like I was in a high school class but there was some difference. I really like how he teach his students. I feel like if I was in his class I would actually pay attention and not just sleep. He likes to be active and have group works for his class. They had a quadrant table and he gave out post it. They had this website when you text a code to a number it shows how many people text and the percentage of class. He connected the voting and the quadrant table to the time management topic.I was there for the whole class period,

good day

9 more to go. 16 hours in total
For today, we had two appointments. It was a straight forward appointments. All they talked about was what classes they need and how can i do all the classes. They figured out when can they take it and whats an easier way. After that I saw him performed at the UYES open mic at the cafeteria. He performed with one of his students, Holly. It was the first time her family seeing her perform and see her rap, including her friends too. They killed that performance and Holly's second song touched me. It was a very strong and powerful song.

First day in class

2 hours so that means 11 hours more to go. 14 hours in total
Today I went to skyline early so I can see my mentor teach his class. He was teaching a lot of students. It was a pretty cool class cause they're we'r actually paying attention. They did a a scavenger hunt around the campus. The purpose of the activity was to make sure the students know where the resources they need for school or something they need. They had to take a picture in the building or whats on the paper and they have to show the TA or Mr. Nevado so they can get points.
